Lili Boulanger: D’Un Soir Triste
Lili Boulanger: D’Un Matin de Printemps
Behzad Ranjbaran: Violin Concerto (NY Premiere)
Walton: Belshazzar’s Feast
Why this program
The program will open with Lili Boulanger’s only orchestral works: two beautiful impressionistic tone poems. Following Ms. Boulanger’s works, the Symphony will perform Ranjbaran’s Violin Concerto. There has been a long and wonderful relationship between the Symphony and Iranian composer Behzad Ranjbaran. The Symphony performed the world premiere of his Cello Concerto, and recorded it. The Symphony also commissioned and performed the world premiere of his Double Concerto for Violin and Viola.
Ranjbaran’s Violin Concerto is a piece of substance, color, and brilliance. Our music director feels this is one of the major new pieces for the instrument and will enter the repertoire as a very important and much beloved concerto. To date, Ranjbaran’s Violin Concerto has not been performed professionally in New York City. Our chorus is one of the treasures of our region, and we would be honored to bring them with us to perform at Carnegie Hall in the powerful and challenging Belshazzar’s Feast by Walton. The orchestra performed this work several times in the past and can tackle its rhythmic complexities with complete assurance showcasing our strengths.
The programming of the virtuosic but vapid Ranjbaran Concerto and the Walton, which is deservedly one of the staples of the repertoire does not seem paritcularly innovative. The welcome programming of the Boulanger does not seem to me to be enough to redeem an otherwise unimaginative slate of works.

The Ranjbaran received its NY premiere four years ago… http://www.juilliard.edu/update/journal/j_article…
It was a good concert.

To call the Walton a “staple of the repertoire” is a gross exaggeration. Paired with the “welcome” Boulanger works, your ground for dismissing the program is that you don’t like the Ranjbaran. Maybe you’ll come around after hearing it again.
