About the Albany Symphony Orchestra
The Albany Symphony Orchestra performed to acclaim at the inaugural Spring For Music festival in 2011 and returns in 2013. One of the Capital Region’s most revered cultural institutions, the orchestra has won numerous national awards for its adventurous concert programming, recording projects, composer residencies, and innovative educational efforts with schools throughout the area. Its dedication to American music is in keeping with the area’s rich history. Founded during the Depression by the Italian-born organist and conductor John Carabella, a favorite pupil of Pietro Mascagni, the orchestra continues to serve a broad and diverse community.
The Orchestra has evolved artistically under the innovative leadership of music directors Carabella, Rudolf Thomas, Ole Windingstad, Edgar Curtis, Julius Hegyi, Geoffrey Simon and David Alan Miller. Maestro Miller was appointed music director and conductor in 1992 and since then has established himself as one of the nation’s foremost conductors whose vision and artistry have propelled the Albany Symphony into a new era. The only professional symphony orchestra based in the Capital Region, it reaches more than 150,000 people every year, across an extended geographical area.
